LPA Tokyo, together with Tokio Marine Nichido Partners and Abitus, will host an online seminar on: “Understanding the 2026 Amendments to Japan’s Personal Information Protection Act through the Lens of EU Regulation”.
Japan’s recent amendments to the Personal Information Protection Act introduce a number of significant developments for businesses, including new rules concerning children’s personal data, cookie IDs and other contactable personal-related information, AI and statistical-use exemptions, direct obligations on data processors, and administrative monetary penalties.
Many of these issues have already been addressed in Europe through the GDPR, ePrivacy rules and related enforcement practice.
In this seminar, LPA Tokyo lawyers Shunya Saihara, Pascal Mages and Yoshiki Tsurumaki will examine the Japanese reforms in light of European regulatory and enforcement experience, with a particular focus on the practical implications for companies operating internationally.
The seminar will also discuss:
- What companies already compliant with the GDPR may need to add for the amended Japanese regime
- Cross-border data transfers between the EU and Japan
- How to design a global privacy programme capable of addressing both Japanese and overseas requirements
